Director Timur Bekmambetov’s American debut is a wish fulfillment fantasy for cubicle-dwelling twentysomething males addicted to first-person shooter video games and The Suicide Girls. Essentially a brain-dead mashup of “Fight Club” and “The Matrix,” it stars English flavor of the month James McAvoy sans British accent as an everyman office drone who is plucked from the doldrums of his job by a secret society of assassins and told that he, like Neo in the Wachowski Brothers smash, is The One. This is the sort of thing that might have made for good, dumb fun a la “Shoot ‘Em Up,” but Bekmambetov seems more interested in creating a series of what Kent M. Beeson of Western Civilization calls “whoah moments” than telling an entertaining story. By the third time bullets collided in mid-air I had already mentally checked out. 36
