Ever since Universal Pictures released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming animated comedy Despicable Me back in July, I’ve been curious about it. The animation looks great, the voice cast is solid, it comes from Christopher Meledandri, the producer of such underrated animated flicks as Robots and Horton Hears a Who! This might actually be something worth watching out for.
And here, just days after Dreamworks released the abysmal trailer for How to Train Your Dragon, Universal and Illumination Entertainment have dropped a new, longer trailer via Apple. This time we finally meet Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell), the world’s #2 supervillain. He’s engaged in a war of wits with Vector (voiced by Jason Segel), the world’s #1 supervillain. That’s all we know for now — but the film follows Gru’s fight to become number one, and to steal the moon.
That sounds fun. The Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud and Sergio Pablos directed film will also feature the voices of Will Arnett, Mindy Kaling, Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand, Danny McBride and Julie Andrews. It hits theaters on July 9, 2010.

Add to myYahoo! In July we posted the teaser trailer for Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me, a computer animated film about a trio of orphan girls cause the normally deplorable Gru to rethink his plan to steal the moon. The trailer mostly focused on a world which has had famous landmarks stolen and completely replaced by giant blow-up replicas. The main character of the movie - Gru, who is voiced by Steve Carell, made a little more than a cameo appearance. This new trailer focuses more on the world's #2 super-villain character Gru, and his attempts to break into a secret lair of the world's #1 super-villain Vector. The voice cast line-up is pretty impressive, with a handful of Judd Apatow regulars with a couple nice surprises: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jemaine Clement, Miranda Cosgrove and Julie Andrews. However, you don't really get to hear any ...

Ridley Scott has been talking about directing Monopoly for some time now. Peter Berg is still waiting to board a Battleship movie. Kevin Lima is going to take us to Candyland. And now, Sony Pictures is planning a big screen adaptation of RISK.
The popular board game — one that ate up several years of my own life in high school and college — will be adapted by Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir and Overbrook Entertainment?s James Lassiter. According to Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, the Hasbro game will lend itself to an exciting thrill-ride of a movie: The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make RISK a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.?
As of now, there is no director or screenwriter attached, but expect something relatively soon. There’s nothing that studios are jumping on more aggressively lately than recognizable, marketable brands.
Read the entire official press release below:
CULVER CITY, Calif., Nov. 4 ? Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired from Hasbro, Inc. the motion picture rights to produce RISK, the classic board game brand of world conquest, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The film will be produced and developed by Hasbro?s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir and Overbrook Entertainment?s James Lassiter.
Commenting on the announcement Belgrad said, ?Hasbro has already seen tremendous success with Transformers and G.I. Joe and audiences have shown a great desire for films that bring to life everything that has made these franchise properties stand the test of time. The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make RISK a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.?
Lassiter added ?We are excited to be working with Hasbro and Columbia Pictures on bringing such a beloved and well-known game to life on the big screen. We have two television projects currently in development with Hasbro Studios and look forward to this collaboration.?
?We are thrilled to be working with tremendous partners like Sony Pictures and Overbrook Entertainment on RISK,? said Brian Goldner, President and CEO of Hasbro, Inc. ?Like so many of Hasbro?s brands, RISK resonates with consumers of multiple generations around the world. We can?t wait to re-imagine this brand into a motion picture.?
The game was invented in 1957 by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse as La Conquete du Monde (The Conquest of the World). Two years later, Parker Brothers published the game in the U.S. as RISK. According to Hasbro, RISK was a groundbreaking game, the first board game to offer nonlinear movement. In the game, players compete on a map of the world, amassing armies and attempting world domination, or, as its rules put it, to ?occupy every territory on the board and in so doing, eliminate all other players.? The game has sold millions of copies and spawned several variations, with settings ranging from movie properties to various periods from world history to the moon.

Our friends over at First Showing got an interesting little scoop this afternoon, picking up some casting news from Robert Redford’s upcoming Lincoln assassination film The Conspirator. A friend of FS’ Alex Billington ran into RocknRolla star Toby Kebbell, who said that he was in town to work on The Conspirator and that he’s playing John Wilkes Booth.
For those who missed 6th grade history, Booth was the man that pulled the trigger on President Abraham Lincoln in Box 7 at Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865.
If this turns out to be true (all signs point to yes, as it’s first hand), Kebbell completes a cast that includes James McAvoy, Robin Wright Penn, Frederick Aiken, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Tom Wilkinson. The film will follow the story of Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. “As the whole nation turns against her, she is forced to rely on her reluctant lawyer to uncover the truth and save her life.” McAvoy will play her lawyer.
It is unknown as of yet how big of a role John Wilkes Booth will play in the film, as much of the story is told after the assassination. Booth was killed by authorities in a Virginia barn house 12-days after the assassination. Overall, I’d say Kebbell is an interesting choice — good to see that he continues to get work, as I enjoyed his performance in RocknRolla. He will also star in the upcoming Disney films Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Add to myYahoo!Roland Emmerich's next disaster film 2012 won't hit theaters for a couple weeks (November 13th), but a sequel has already been planned... but not the normal kind of sequel. Entertainment Weekly has learned that Emmerich and executive producer Howard Gordon (Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice) are also developing a television drama titled 2013, which would be about what happens after the disaster. Grdon has already entered talks with ABC to develop the series, and if it does happen, don't expect a lot of action to take place on the small screen, as this would be a drama set in a post apocalyptic setting.Spoiler warning: Apparently some people on earth survive the epic disaster of 2012, and the series would be about "a group of people who survived .... on a piece of land that was spared or one that became an island in the process of the crust moving. There ...

Poor Guitar Hero. All they want to do is show cartoons of rock stars bouncing around and having fun, and now everyone's gotta get all uptight about it.
First Activision, Guitar Hero's maker, had to weather a storm about their use of an animated rendition of Kurt Cobain. And now Gwen Stefani is getting all worked about about the fact that the cartoon version of her does things that she says the real Gwen would never ever do, like sing about having sex with prostitutes. Sure you wouldn't Gwen...
Stefani and her band No Doubt have filed a suit against Activision stating that the gamemaker's use of their likenesses goes way beyond what the band signed off on and that the game has "transformed No Doubt band members into a virtual karaoke circus act," which is certainly something no band likes.
The suit also charges that the game allows users to manipulate their characters to sing songs popularized by other pop music acts. No Doubt's contract with Activision allowed the company to use the band's music and likenesses in no more than three of the band's own songs, the suit states. The game, which was released Tuesday, puts the group members' images, collectively and individually, into more than 60 songs, "many of which include lyrics, contained in iconic songs, which are not appropriate for No Doubt and have not been and would not have been chosen by No Doubt for recordings or public performances."
Specifically, the suit notes that through the game's Character Manipulation Feature, Stefani's image can be induced to sing the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women." "While No Doubt are avid fans of the Rolling Stones and even have performed in concerts with the Rolling Stones," the complaint states, "the Character Manipulation Feature results in an unauthorized performance by the Gwen Stefani avatar in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes." It also states that bassist Kanal's likeness can be manipulated to sing, in a female voice, one of No Doubt's signature hits, "Just a Girl."
The suit asks for punitive damages and seeks to take the No Doubt edition off the market, which will create someday a red hot bootleg market of illegal Stefani avatars being made to dance to "Party in the USA". interrupting Taylor Swift acceptance speeches and belt out "Pokerface" in Portugese.
