Danny Boyles 127 Hours To Have Over An Hour of No
Dialogue

A couple days ago it was reported that Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) had found his next film project, 127 Hours, a story of Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who amputated his own arm to free himself after being trapped by a boulder for nearly five days. Indiewire had a chance to talk to the filmmaker at the BAFRA Brittania Awards, and Boyle confirmed that Slumdog Millionaire writer Simon Beaufoy has not yet started the screenplay, which will be based on Boyle's treatment. But the big news tidbit to come out of the conversation is how he plans to shoot the film. Boyle intends to film the first hour of the movie with no dialogue. In the true life story, Ralston was completely alone, stuck in the canyon. And Boyle will not be introducing and vollyball ball tricks ala Tom Hanks in Castaway. The film will have ...

Interview: Adam Goldberg on His New Film
(Untitled), Static Art World Culture, and Kicking the Bucket

When it comes to a working actor who humorously perfects the modern guy as a hip scepter for perpetual thought and frazzled irritation, Adam Goldberg holds the key to today's conflicted kingdom. Dating back to his break out role in Dazed and Confused and on to an ace performance in 2007's 2 Days in Paris (one of the only romantic comedies that is meaningful and tolerable), like his characters, part of Goldberg's charm seems channeled via friendly reluctance. He continues to mine such neurotic territory playing the lead in (Untitled), a surprisingly accessible quasi-satire of the contemporary New York art world.Portraying a struggling artist named Adrian Jacobs who composes abstract atonal music---who might kill himself at age 30 for the sake of integrity---Goldberg captures, often in silence, the nagging doubts and petty contradictions of a personality burdened by the mythical qualifiers for "real art" and the "true artist." Standing in face of this absorbed ...

DVD OF THE WEEK & PODCAST: Wings of Desire

Wings of DesireIn celebration of Criterion's deluxe double-DVD and Blu-ray treatment of Wings of Desire, my Benten Films partner-in-crime Andrew Grant and I rewatched Wim Wenders' 1987 masterpiece (and pored over the bonus features) to discuss the film's elusive magic and why a work so specific to East-West German tensions has aged so gracefully. Andrew reminisces about spending time in Berlin around the time of the production, with other topics of conversation including They Might Be Giants, Nick Cave's inner thoughts, Peter Falk's unconscious plot hole, a rather unfortunate sequel, and how Wings of Desire almost ended with an pie fight. If you haven't already absorbed its its pleasures (or, god forbid, you only know its atrocious H'wood remake, City of Angels), here's the Criterion synopsis:

Wings of Desire is one of cinema's loveliest city symphonies. Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist (Henri Alékan, is movie poetry. And it forever made the name Wim Wenders synonymous with film art.

Jurassic Park IV breaks the mould

There's been a lot of talk of a Jurassic Park IV, but nothing ever really happened, or so we thought, for Joe Johnston has revealed that he's read the story for the fourth film and it's a good one. What's more is that it breaks the mould from the previous films, and that it could take the franchise in an entirely new direction, if it was ever to be made of course. I'll set your expectations now though, there's no word of the film actually happening, it's just that he's read or heard the idea, and the interview doesn't drill...Visit Filmstalker for the full story. The Blackout trailer online

A trailer popped online for a film called The Blackout, a smaller film that wants to do one of those common but very cool ideas of portraying a huge incident in a very small and closed off view. The Blackout is the story of a blackout that is spreading across the country and it seems like the world, and the residents of an apartment building are caught in their building and are disappearing one by one. It seems that something in the basement is thriving in the darkness and looking to break free....Visit Filmstalker for the full story. Restricted feeds to protect content.
