Gigantor: The Collection Volume 2 DVD Review

I've reviewed some bad films and TV shows in my time, but I think I can honestly say that getting through 26 episodes of Gigantor was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. The biggest problem was falling asleep every time I tried to watch more than one episode at a time.

See The Where the Wild Thing Are Soundtrack Come
to Life

Wherethewildsthingsareheader

wtwta-soundtrackStarbucks and Warner Bros. have released a brand new behind the scenes featurette for Where the Wild Things Are, this time showing us how the soundtrack came together. This is the fourth in a long-line of featurettes that have shown us how director Spike Jonze has brought Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book to life. This time, we see Spike and Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) as they recount the story of the soundtrack composition. Many have already heralded WTWTA for its music, with the Arcade Fire song that was used in the trailer. And from what we’re hearing, the soundtrack is going to be just as impressive.

One thing that I love to see is the Daniel Johnston cover “Worried Shoes,” conducted by Karen O and sung by a choir of kids. That’s very cool. After watching this — and the other Lance Bangs produced featurettes — I can’t help but think that this movie must have been a blast to make. Spike Jonze already has the air of childish energy, and if that energy translates to the film, I think we’re in for a treat. I’m seeing it Monday, so I’ll let you all know.

For now, lets all watch this great featurette below. Where the Wild Things Are is in theaters October 16, 2009. The soundtrack is currently available on Amazon.com.

O HAPPY DAY! DODGERS SWEEP CARDINALS!

The Cardinals go down. I don't think I unclenched my teeth for three hours. I'm either delirious or suddenly about 150 pounds lighter, but eiher way it feels pretty damn good. What an amazing way to finish this series, with Either and an apparently rejuvenated Manny leading the way, flying high while Vicente Padilla, just the latest in an ever-increasing line of Dodgers Who Weren't Dodgers in August, stepped up to take the stage and prove himself an essential postseason player. Padilla did it by muscling a steady diet of fastballs past the heretofore prodigious Cardinals lineup with amazing swagger, reducing Pujols, Holliday, De la Rosa et al down to the effectiveness of triple-A onlookers as they watched their World Series hopes take flight on battered wings of red and disappear into the chilly midwestern night.

I have to say, the Dodgers have the better season record against the Rockies (14-4) and have proven they can beat them in the games that count?you remember those games when the Rockies moved within two of first place, only to be repelled by Dodger wins and Rockies losses, and, oh, yeah, that division-clinching series on the first weekend of October. So sure, I think a Dodgers-Rockies NLCS might go down pretty easy indeed, and might also go a long way toward quashing the insistent line that the National League West is a soft division. With the Cardinals KO?ed today, and know-it-all pundit favorites like the Red Sox down for the count, and the Phillies no better than even after two in their series, the prospect of all those East Coast-biased teams dropping like flies is like catnip to my fantasies of the Dodgers making it back to the World Series at last. With this kind of steam built up as they roll into the NLCS, I wouldn?t be averse to a rematch from last year either, and a chance to dish out some payback for last year against the Almighty Phillies.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll say it for you, nonbeliever: What about Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels? Okay, they?re damn good pitchers. Who would say otherwise? But so are Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. And as good as those Cardinal hurlers are, look where it got ?em?a ticket to stand on the outside looking in as the Dodgers? starters, whom absolutely no one gave more than a whisker?s chance in a blast furnace of surviving the La Russa-led gauntlet, are celebrating and still damned happy to be considered underdogs when it comes to that 2008 NLCS rematch. The Phillies have a big, power-hitting first baseman who might just as easily be put in a tin can like Prince Albert was over the course of the series, and slingshot slingers like Randy Wolf, Clayton Kershaw and Vicente (El Hombre) Padilla are already picking out their rocks.

But that?s what might be. When the ice is finally chipped away on that chilly Rockies-Phillies series, then we can talk about the real thing. Now is for the savoring, and savor we shall, Dodger fans. Well done, gentlemen. Bring on Thursday.

Here?s former Dodger broadcaster Ross Porter on today?s game 3, and Los Angeles Times writer Ben Bolch with all the details.

Screen Queens

Hi, Matt Canada here with a weekly column looking back at gay cinema classics. I think that alot of people, gay and straight alike, view gay films as formally, thematically, and socially ghettoised and sub par. It is my goal that this column will reflect the diversity, breadth, and quality of the gay canon. This body of films encompasses everything from those made by gay filmmakers dealing explicitly with gay issues (Milk); to gay authored films that are nominally straight stories, but are interpreted by many as allegorically commenting on Lavender themes (George Cukor's Rich and Famous); camp classics (Mommie Dearest); gay films authored by heterosexual directors, screenwriters and/or producers (Brokeback Mountain); and those "heterosexual films" that have always been appropriated by gay audiences as queer (All About Eve). With such a wide array of possible films to look at, this column will bring something unique to the table each weekend.

First up is Beeban Kidron's Too Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995) starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo as drag queens. The story of three drag queens on a road trip across the less metropolitan wilds of the country's interior, where there's a breakdown which subsequently forces interactions with less refined locals, was not a very novel idea the year after the success of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It has long been derided as a bad American remake of said film. However, when I first saw this film at around eight or nine (oblivious to my sexuality), I had never heard of Priscilla and loved the film's campness, lavish frocks, sequins, smiles and happy ending. Even as I grew up and my tastes matured, I continued to love everything about the film. It was practically the only gay themed film I watched in my adolescence with straight friends and family. They loved it. I loved it. It was one of the only positive and shared experiences of gay culture as a closeted youth.

So that is all well and good, but now that I have an honours Film degree and a dissertation on gay cinema behind me, bitchy humour, cocks in frocks, and a happy ending can't still have the same effect, right?

...I am not going to lie, I was almost embarrassed by how much I still loved it. Do not get me wrong, I did realise its faults on this viewing: including but not limited to the completely unbelievable script, desexualized gay men, condescending attitude towards women, and deus ex machina conclusion. However, I still find the film immensely enjoyable. The three stars as drag queens are great and obviously having loads of fun. They have everything you want from celluloid female impersonators: over-acting, bitchy one-liners, and an innate campness. However, the relationships between the three queens and especially the relationship between Swayze's Grand Dame and Stockard Channing's battered-housewife carry some real emotional weight and are expertly acted, if not flawlessly written.

The film is not perfect but it is a definitely more than a Priscilla rip-off. I think it deserves some revisiting. As some English queens say - it's camp as tits - and I love it.

PETER AND VANDY Review

PETER AND VANDY is a funny, charming, and realistic, its portrayal of a couple that’s been living together for quite some time is a reflection of what could actually happen to a couple that’s been living together for… quite some time. Partly romantic, partly frustrating and all around constant struggle just to stay sane. [...]
