Texas Snow review at The Chutry Experiment

Check out Chuck Tryon's review of Aaron Coffman's new feature Texas Snow here.

(full disclosure; i will be screening Texas Snow at Lo-Def on August 21, so i am glad chuck liked TS)

From the review:

"...Texas Snow is a well-crafted film. The cinematography is quite good, and Coffman is content, in places, to simply allow the camera to observe, to capture subtle details of a space, such as an apartment or an art gallery. The twentysomething characters certainly brought back memories of my own late nights during graduate school, and I think Coffman is attentive to the nuances of character and dialogue,..."

Eva Mendes Blames That Silly Rehab Stay On Very
Serious Bout Of Method Acting [We Are All On Drugs]

What better way to annul your time spent in rehab than by pulling the old ?It was just research!? card? That?s what Eva Mendes is allegedly claiming, pegging her January stay at Le Cirque in Utah to an upcoming role in Queen Of The South where she'll play a female drug lord or, as some have termed the character, ?the female Scarface.? At the time, so-called insiders came forward saying Mendes was everything from a ?closet drinker? to a prescription drug addict. Though it?s a nice thought that Mendes? month-long stay alongside real-live drunk Kirsten Dunst was just a hush-hush effort to really feel like a druggie, we took a look at the timeline coupled with Mendes? past, and find the excuse weak at best:

For one thing, Mendes has already appeared in her fair share of drug movies. There was last year?s We Own The Night, where she played the coke-dabbling girlfriend to Joaquin Phoenix?s drug dealer with a heart of gold. And 2003?s Once Upon A Time In Mexico centered around the Mexican president declaring war on a drug cartel, while that same year she played drug money-lover Denzel Washington?s ex-wife in Out Of Time. As for her potentially career-boosting role in Queen, her casting was announced only two weeks ago. Until her stay in rehab, two other names were still circling around the part: Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz were said to be in consideration for the part as well. We only wish they?d gone with Cruz early on and relieved Mendes of the need to method act her way all the way to Le Cirque and scandal; Cruz already nailed the powdered-up girlfriend in Blow so convincingly that we still can?t help looking at her without getting the sense that she?s just itching to snort the dandruff off of whatever guy has currently enlisted her as their Beard.

SnipesFlightWatch: Wesley Granted Bail [Wesley
Snipes]

To add yet another unlikely wrinkle to the Wesley Snipes Totally Fucking Insane Tax-Avoidance Trial of the Century, artful Uncle Sam-dodger Wesley Snipes has convinced a judge (and, we suspect, unabashed Murder at 1600 fanatic) to release the actor on bail pending an appeal to his three-year sentence for accidentally forgetting in which shoe box he placed the IRS's $38 million check:

Snipes had been set to surrender to federal prison authorities during the first week of June to begin serving his sentence, and prosecutors had earlier vowed to oppose any request to allow him to remain free pending an appeal.

U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges wrote that he was "dubious" of Snipes appeal arguments. But Hodges agreed to bail, noting that Snipes otherwise could easily serve his entire sentence before a decision could be reached on his appeal.

The news was instantly followed by an FBI-issued APB to all U.S. law-enforcement agencies, informing them that the Snipes-Flight Threat Level Advisory had just been elevated to red: Severe Risk of Hauling Ass. Additionally, airport security personnel across the country have been faxed a recent photo of the actor taken from his official website, and instructed to instantly detain anyone bearing even a passing resemblance to the actor, and who may or may not be journeying towards asylum in Iran where Passenger 57 has been adopted as an unofficial second religion.

Loud, Coarse Motorhead Legend to be Featured in
Surprisingly Loud, Coarse Documentary [Bass In Your Face]

Where to even start when discussing a documentary about Lemmy Kilmister, the legendary Motorhead frontman and apparent subject of a forthcoming film appropriately enough titled Lemmy? Even the fucking co-directors don't even know, with filmmaker Greg Olliver telling Billboard today: "Shooting Lemmy is like filming dangerous wildlife. He never does what you expect him to do, and he never does anything you want him to do." Olliver's partner, Wes Orshoski, agreed: "Lemmy never ceases to surprise me. ... You think you know who Lemmy is, but you have no idea. If you think you have Lemmy all figured out, trust me. You don't!" Actually... we think we might.

After all, both the trailer streaming over the doc's Web site and Billboard's own review confirm it: "A distribution deal hasn't yet been inked, but the teaser clip [features] onstage footage and such amusing backstage segments as Kilmister testing out a bass amp at deafening volume and telling dirty jokes." The hell with it — make it two films with Benicio Del Toro as Lemmy and a sack lunch with beer during intermission when it premieres at Cannes '09. Distributors love that shit! Oh, wait.
