Doomsday

(2008, Neil Marshall)

Derivative sci-fi thriller from director Marshall, who here indulges his inner fanboy by creating what amounts to little more than an incoherent amalgamation of George Miller’s Mad Max trilogy and John Carpenter’s Escape from New York. Of course, like any good fanboy, he tops things off by adding a hot, Kate Beckinsale lookalike action heroine to the mix. This overly talky mess is quite a disappointment, coming as it does after Marshall’s overrated but admittedly effective all-female spelunking horror flick The Descent. For his next outing, he should show more and tell less.

The Dark Knight

(2008, Christopher Nolan)

And now some belated thoughts on the greatest movie of all-time.

On this one I find myself squarely in the middle between the IMDb kiddies (who think the movie is better than Citizen Kane, The Godfather and Rear Window, among 246 others) and the curmudgeonly oldsters (The three Davids and Boston Phoenix’s Peter Keough, to mention a few) who all seem to be in unison in their preference for Tim Burton’s cartoonish vision of Batman.

With so much, better stuff already on the internet, there’s little reason for me to really try. Instead, I will toss off a few random bullet points.

Ellen My Cat She saved my life

Okay I never mention sad things but I have to get this out. I got my cat "Ellen" in 1997. For weeks before I got her I looked at lots of places that had kittens Then one day in Reseda I went to a pet store and they had a sign that you would get a free kitten if you bought $20 worth of pet supplies. Well I went to where they were keeping the kittens. There must of been 20 kittens. They were all playing together except the one in the back of the pin. I picked her up and held her like you would hold a baby. The kitten didn't mind it being held that way. So I brought her home.

You must remember this was 1997. Ellen DeGeneres was coming out and here was this kitten that looked like she was wearing a TUX so I had to call her "Ellen".

"Ellen" my kitten was sweat. She loved to sit on my lap. A few months after I got "Ellen" my life went into the toilet. To make a long story I had to grow up because of my immaturity.

In August of 1997 I had a breakdown. I had to pull myself together. I thought for awhile that no one loved me or ever would. However right when I thought nobody loved me or would ever love me "Ellen" jumped in my lap. Then I knew there was someone that cared & loved me. So what it was a cat. She needed me to feed her & to take care of her. She loved me. She needed me. Her jumping on my lap at that moment save my life. I knew I had to then be around for her! For some reason thought and knew nobody could ever love or take care of her like I would.

Now about 2 months ago "Ellen" started losing weight. I put her on medication but sadly today as I was going to work I found her dead. She was outside. Covered in flies. She was alive just a few hours before. The night before she ate a whole can of cat food. She slept the night before on my big chair.

I felt so bad because I wasn't there when she died. I know this sounds like Diane Chambers here (From Cheers The Tv Show) but"Ellen" saved my life. She needed me as much as I needed her. She became my 100% focus when I got sober. ( I was a drinker)

Today I lost her. I had her for 11 years. She moved with me across country. From California to Mississippi. When hurricane Katrina hit she was about the only thing I had left. When we evacuated we saved our pets. To me it was the correct thing. I am not sorry for saving my cats life.

The pain I am going through was worth the 11 years that I had her. I will never have another cat like her. She was special. She was my and will always be my baby. If there is a heaven she is there.

Illegal Downloading [Comic-Con 2008]

Spaced is a popular BBC show from a few years back, and it is not science fiction.  Did you think it was?  Fool.  How could you make a mistake like that over a show that starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was directed by Edgar Wright?  And you call yourself a ...

Comic-Con Report: The Watchmen Get Deep Into
Character [Comic-Con 2008]

There's something dark and beautiful about "Watchmen" that separates it from other novels. It's a story, most of all, about human beings struggling in a world that they don't understand and that doesn't understand them. It seems like the question of whether the story is relevant to our current socio-political ...

The Night Is Darkest Before The Dawn [The Clip
Show]

· If it weren't for Dark Knight news, there wouldn't have been much news at all. After dispatching the Joker, Batman took on his toughest foe to date, the deranged Momzo The Clown (specialty: extortion). Batman denies all of the charges, which is just fine with new Oscar frontrunner Aaron Eckhart.
· NBC announced that Jay Leno will be abdicating his Tonight Show throne on May 29, 2009 while a disguised Jay Leno sat in the audience cracking wise. Meanwhile, Jimmy Fallon will be spinning his wheels online for a few months before they let him loose on air.
· Miley "Slut!" Cyrus took to the YouTubes to wage war on her new rival, Selena Gomez.
· If you come within 1,000 yards of Brangelina's test tube babies, Brad Pitt will beat you to a pulp.
· We finally learned what Judd Apatow's favorite season of The Wire was.
· Surfer dude Matthew McConaughey cashed a $3 million check from OK! for baby pictures of young prince Levi.
· Maybe it's just us, but Lyons & Mankiewicz doesn't quite have the same ring as Ebert & Roeper (let alone Siskel & Ebert).
· Cuts at Vantage and Netflix made it another tough week for indie film.
· Fer sure, fer sure, we counted down our favorite Valley Girls.
· Don't bother with MapQuest, NPH can tell you how to get, how to get to Sesame Street.
· And finally, the passing of Estelle Getty affected everyone, from teary YouTube eulogists to our own Molly McAleer. The saddest part? None of the Golden Girls made it to the funeral. Nevertheless, the memory of Sophia Petrillo will always live on.
